Myopia, or “Near-sightedness”, is a common vision condition where object near to you appear clearly, but objects farther away begin to blur. Children with a myopic condition is likely to worsen in adulthood, owing to lifestyle changes and genetics. This can cause myopia-associated eye diseases like Retinal Tear, Retinal Detachment, Glaucoma, Cataracts and even blindness. The most effective age of myopia management is during their growing years between 8 – 13, as this is the period where myopia progresses quickly.
Depending on your child’s eye, we can prescribe customized spectacle lenses with clear central vision with lightweight and impact resistant lens material. The peripheral defocus of the lenses help to control the elongation of the eye which in turns helps to control myopia from further progression. We also prescribe Orthokeratology lenses (Ortho-K lens) which is a special type of rigid permeable contact lens that is worn overnight to correct your child’s prescription. It flattens the cornea of the eye every night to maintain clear vision in the morning without the help of spectacles. Ortho-K lenses can start as early as 4 years old.
There is no option of a 100% myopia control method in the market as of yet. Ortho-k lenses and Myopia spectacles lenses has a effective rate of ~43%-56% and ~60%-70% respectively, which is currently one of the highest non-invasive and comfortable options in the market.
